PRESS RELEASE – September 15, 2017

At the September 13 meeting of the Rotary Club of Fluvanna County, the club presented Carysbrook Elementary with a check in the amount of $6051.70.  These funds will be used to provide equipment for the school’s Science Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Room.

Ms. Amy Hartwell, Carysbrook’s Instructional Technology Resource Teacher developed a proposal of equipment that she would like to have in the space to work with all of the Carysbrook students.  The equipment will include items such as KEVA Planks, Bloxels, Lego, Makey Makey, Snap Circuits, a Rocket Launcher, and a Padcaster.  Ms. Hartwell developed the proposal with input from the Carysbrook teacher and studied the VA Standards of Learning (SOLs) for Grades 3 and 4 in an effort to match the projects with the concepts students are learning in their science curriculum.

“These hands-on experiences help our students to develop a deeper understanding of the material and how it applies to the real-world, stated Mr. Scott Lucas, Principal of Carysbrook.

This is the second such space that the Fluvanna Rotary Club has funded.  The club helped to create a STEAM Lab at Central Elementary in 2016.

Fluvanna Rotary received a district designated funds grant from Rotary District 7600.  This grant was combined with a donation from local company Red Boucanier and the Rose Deborah Altschull Endowment for Youth of the Rotary Foundation of Fluvanna County to make this grant possible.
