PRESS RELEASE – September 13, 2016

James Barlow, Principal at Fluvanna County High School, announced today that FCHS senior, Harrison Lee, has been named a 2017 National Merit® Scholarship Semi-Finalist. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The 16,000 students selected as Semi-Finalists have an opportunity to continue to compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. The Semi-Finalists represent less than one percent of the nationwide pool of more than 1.5 million juniors. Every finalist competes for 2,500 National Merit® $2500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis.

Harrison is in the process of completing a detailed scholarship application, in which he will provide information about his academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

Harrison is the son of Hector and Carla Lee of Palmyra, Virginia. His sister Alexandra is a freshman at the High School. He is very active in school activities, is a member of the marching band, and the High School’s Academic Team. Harrison is a board member of the newly established Political Awareness Club at the High School. The club is focusing on voter registration drives. Harrison was selected as a Battle of the Brains All-Star for his exemplary performance on the quiz show. Harrison is a member of the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School. He also received the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Harrison continues to challenge himself; his current course load includes 5 AP classes and one dual-enrollment class. Harrison is interested in studying economics and international relations in college with an interest in being a diplomat.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2017 will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.

Fluvanna County High School will administer the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT) on Wednesday, November 2 at the High School.
