Fluvanna Holds Annual 24 Math Competition

On March 28th, 2024, the Fluvanna Middle School gymnasium was filled with a buzz of activity as students crunched numbers to solve math problems to reach the solution of “24”. Participants played the 24 Game, which involves a deck of cards, each showing four whole numbers between 1 and 9.  When presented with a card, the players strive to be the first to combine the four numbers to make 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  In addition to supporting pattern recognition, mental-math, and problem-solving abilities, this game has proven to elicit a high level of interest and excitement in Math from students.  

Fluvanna students in Grades 3 through 7 have been practicing at both Carysbrook Elementary and Fluvanna Middle School with the help of their teachers and coaches William Reese, Stephanie Jamison, and Katherine Settle over the course of the school-year to become fluent with multiple methods and strategies for reaching a solution to the 24 Game. These students put their hard work to the test this Thursday as they competed in Fluvanna County Public School’s annual 24 Math Competition while their friends and family cheered them on from the sidelines.

The top four competitors in each grade level have been invited to participate in Regional 24 Tournament in Orange County on April 11th at 5:30 PM. Congratulations is given to all participants and a special thanks to our judges and district office for supporting the event.
